John and Julie visit the "Spiral Jetty" on the Great Salt Lake, July 2004

.

The "Spiral Jetty" is a sculptural earthwork on the Great Salt lake in Northern Utah, Robert Smithson created it in 1970. Julie and I did not know what to expect when we reached the piece. It is actually quite a journey to get there which made it more exciting when we finally did.  The piece was not visible for a long time due to the lake covering it up, but the lake has gone down enough over the last couple of years due to drought. The whole piece was encrusted with salt from being under water for so long. The black rocks were transformed giving the piece a surreal/spiritual atmosphere.
